Day 2: May Day

My favorite memory from May Day would probably be from a couple years ago (I think I was in 6th or 7th grade) when I watched the May Day queen dance with her mom, my former religion teacher from 4th grade, Mrs. Miyata. Although the religion classes we had with her were pretty short and we wouldn’t really do much, I remember always enjoying having Mrs. Miyata as a teacher. She would always be in a good mood which made me feel happy too. When I watched her dance with her daughter that year, I remember it so clearly because it was really cool to see the two of them dance together. She would always talk about her daughter to us during class and what she was up to so it was memorable to finally see them together doing something that they both enjoy. I also remember how they danced very gracefully which also summarizes just how everyone that dances at May Day is always so graceful and peaceful. Something that I miss about the May Day assembly would probably be watching my friends dance. I rarely ever get to see my friends dance in a real performance and it’s different to see them actually be serious for something when it’s not very often that I see them in that way.

I remember this May Day really vividly as well. I only had Mrs. Miyata for one year so I didn’t share the same connection to her, but for some reason this performance is my first thought when I think of the school’s May Day program. I think for me the performance felt more personal than say an ordinary hula performance because you could see the passion and connection as mother and daughter danced together
